Biotechnology Ignition Grant Scheme (BIG) – BIRAC

About BIRAC and BIG:

BIRAC aims to support entrepreneurs who have an exciting idea which may be in the nascent and planning stage in the form of Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG). This scheme is designed to stimulate commercialization of research discoveries by providing very early stage grants for the development and maturation of those discoveries into marketable product or intellectual property (IP), in particular to help bridge the gap between discovery and invention.

The purpose of the BIG Scheme is to:

• Upscale and validate Proof of concept
• Encourage researchers to take technology closer to market through a Start Up
• Excite interest of potential licensees or investors

Eligibility

• Biotechnology start-ups
  • Registered company incorporated no older than 5 years
  • Company should have an functional R&D lab
  • If the registered company does not have a functional Lab of its own, then it should be incubated in an Incubator which has a functional Lab.
• Entrepreneurs or Potential entrepreneurs from Academia, Research Institute, or Researchers, PhDs, Medical degree holders, Biomed Engg. Graduates:
  • Incubated in a Technology Business Incubator

With an exciting idea which may be in the nascent and planning stage can apply under BIG scheme.

Process for applicants affiliated to Venture Center

• Visit BIG website (http://www.birac.nic.in/desc_new.php?id=83) and understand the scheme, application process, application form etc
• Contact Ms Priya Nagaraj (Email: bioincubator@venturecenter.co.in |Tel: 7410045657) for a preliminary discussion
• Join one of Venture Center’s programs as per need. Possible programs are:

  • BioEnterprise Fellowship Program (http://www.bioincubator.venturecenter.co.in/enterprisefellows.php)

• Develop and strengthen your proposal and application in discussion with VC’s BioIncubator team
• Apply online at BIRAC website
• First round of short listing by BIG partners
• Final shortlisted applicants are invited by BIRAC to make a presentation
• Intimation of “in-principle okay” from BIRAC’s national committee for some applicants
• Due-diligence and detailed assessment of proposals by BIG partner
• Grant of funds to applicant
