Reimagining Health: An Evening of Insight and Inspiration with Dr. Anurag Mairal

A chat with Dr. Anurag Mairal on a lively Wednesday evening, with students exploring Biodesign and seasoned entrepreneurs filling the room. The audience came eager to discuss healthcare innovation and left inspired. 


 

Dr. Anurag Mairal's fireside chat on his book Reimagining Health was a compelling exploration of health-tech innovation and its potential to address global disparities. 

Dr. Mairal emphasized that most healthcare investments focus on the top of the pyramid, leaving vast underserved populations behind. However, through modular and adaptable technology, there’s an opportunity to refocus on equitable, patient-centered care.

He highlighted the power of distributed innovation, where innovators from diverse communities collaborate globally to solve localized challenges. This diversity—of innovators, communities, and solutions—fosters creative approaches to healthcare. He shared moving stories of empathy-driven innovation, showcasing how understanding real-world needs can lead to meaningful impact.

The discussion also addressed frugal innovation, distinguishing it from jugaad by emphasizing sustainability and scalability. By leveraging modular technology and fostering cross-disciplinary partnerships, innovators can create solutions that prioritize equity and accessibility.

Questions from the audience centered on what biodesign programs should prioritize, revealing a strong interest in creating systems that shift healthcare from reactive “sick care” to proactive prevention and wellness.

Venture Center is the training partner for the DBT-supported Biodesign program being run by THSTI(Translational Health Science and Technology Institute). The Biodesign fellows also got the chance to interact with Dr. Mairal.
