- Sinhagad:also know as the Lion Fort, is located 25 kilometers South of Pune. A 17th Century fort, steeped in history, the Samadhi of Tanaji Malusare, Shivaji's great general is located here. Buses are available from the Sarasbaug Bus Stand, to the foothill of the fort. Or one may travel by private vehicle. A favourite picnic spot for puneites, Not to be missed is the bhaji's and dahi wati sold here, as alos the pithla-bhakri and rustic chicken curry!
- Purandar fort:(also called Purandhar fort) figures repeatedly in the rising of Shivaji against the Bijapur kingdom and the Mughals. Purandhar fort stands 4,472 ft. above the sea (1,387 m) in the Western Ghats, 20 miles southeast of Pune. It actually consists of two forts - Purandar and Vajragad (or Rudramal). The latter is the smaller of the two and is on the eastern side of the main fort. The village Purandar takes its name from this fort. Purandar fort is also known for birthplace of Sambhaji raje Bhosle (son of Chhatrapati Shivajiraje Bhosale and second Chhatrapti).
- Raigad:Fort Raigad, situated at a height of 2851 ft and 150 kms from Pune. it served as the capital of Shivaji, and the place where his coronation took place. A fort that has turned into a Shrine in memory of the Great Maratha Warrior for his valour, courage and patriotism. One can trek up the fort or there is a ropeway also, which takes one to the top in about 4 mins.
- Torna Fort or Prachandagad:is a large fort located in Pune district in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is historically significant because it is the first fort captured by Shivaji in 1643, at the age of 16 forming the nucleus of the Maratha empire. The hill has an elevation of 1,403 metres (4,603 ft) above sea level, making it the highest hill-fort in the district. The name derives from Prachanda (Marathi for huge or massive) and gad (Marathi for fort).
- Janjira: an awesome fort built in the middle of the sea. It has to be approached by boat. Distance 160 kms from Pune. Though the interiors are in ruins, they give a glimpse of the glorious past. The Guns here are especially famous, as they could fire to a distance of 2 kms! The beach at Alibaug & Murud Janjira form a base, in close proximity to many forts worth a visit!
- Shivneri Fort:is a 17th-century military fortification located near Junnar. It is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji, the founder of Maratha Empire.
- Pratapgad (also transcribed Pratapgarh or Pratapgadh): (English: Valour Fort) is a large fort located in Satara district, in the state of Maharashtra in India. Significant as the site of the Battle of Pratapgad, the fort is now a popular tourist destination.
- Tikona also known as Vitandgad: is the dominant hill fort in Maval in western India. It is located near Kamshet around 60 km from Pune. The village nearest to the fort is called Tikona-Peth or Tokono-Peth. The 3500 ft high hill is pyramidal in shape and the name Tikona means "triangle".[1] The fort is a trekking destination noted for the large doors, the temple of 'Trimbakeshwar Mahadev', a water tank and some Satvahan caves. Trek organisers also commend the views of Pawna dam and the nearby forts of Tung, Lohagad and Visapur.[1] There is a lake at the summit.
- Lohagad (iron fort): is one of the many hill forts of Maharashtra state in India. Situated close to the hill station Lonavala and 52 km (32 mi) northwest of Pune, Lohagad rises to an elevation of 1,033 m (3,389 ft) above sea level. The fort is connected to the neighboring Visapur fort by a small range. The fort was under the Maratha empire for the majority of time, with a short period of 5 years under the Mughal empire.
- Rajmachi (Udhewadi): is a small village in the rugged mountains of Sahyadri in India. The fortification at Rajmachi consists of two forts , namely Shrivardhan fort and Manaranjan Fort. Rajmachi Fort is a popular trekking destination. [1] It is a very famous fort located near two famous hills of Maharashtra, Lonavala and Khanadala.
- Korigad:(also called Koraigad, Koarigad or Kumwarigad) is a fort located about 20 km away from Lonavla in Pune district, Maharashtra, India. Its date of construction is not known but likely predates 1500. It is about 929 m above sea level.[1] The closest village is Peth Shahpur. This fort was incorporated into his kingdom by Shivaji along with the forts of Lohagad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona in 1657.
- Visapur fort:(also called Visapoor fort) is a hill fort near Visapur village in Maharashtra, India. It is a part of the Lohagad-Visapur fortification. It was built during 1713-1720 CE by Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa of Maratha Empire.[1][2] Visapur fort was built much later than Lohagad but the histories of the two forts are closely linked.
